Another English Summer

As the lukewarm sun begins to sow a path above the horizon from its months of hibernation in warmer climes, half the world away and the winter coats are re-hooked, the electric heaters turned down and the anti-freeze re-shelved, we turn in expectation and hope of the not too distant summer. Those days of relentless drizzle that dampens both spirit and mind fade to memories, replaced with thoughts of the warm air, the beach, the village green, ice creams and fun. Those chasers of the winter sun too return, with their stories of adventures from lands afar. Our spirits, free of their winter coats, rise as one, along with the mercury and we count down the days to those long hot evenings, where sunglasses, shorts and sandals can be worn without discerning glances and comments from the huddled masses. So don’t be despondent, don’t be down because before you know it, whether you’re climbing up Mount Everest or kicking about at home, another English summer will be upon us. JD Bartholomew
